Mirena- An Effective, Long Term, Pregnancy Control Measure
Mirena is a popular treatment to prevent pregnancy. It’s basically a type of intrauterine contraceptive which releases tiny amounts of progesting hormone (levonorgestrel) into the uterus where it is placed. This treatment is administered by healthcare professionals and periodically checked for the right placement. It is a small, “T-shaped” device which is made of flexible and suitable plastic. A health provider inserts an IUD into a woman’s uterus to prevent unplanned pregnancy. This device releases a progestin hormone in a small amount. It is effective for five years down the line.
Mirena IUD actually contains female hormone, which is used for preventing the uterine lining and makes it tougher for the sperms to attach the uterus. The device even prevents egg making it harder to get attached to uterus. It releases hormone which helps to avoid pregnancy. Hence, it is prescribed for those women who do not want to get pregnant for about 5 years or so.
This medication can also be used by women who have given birth to at least one child. The device is placed directly into the uterus by experienced medical practitioner with the help of one thin plastic tube. It is introduced into the female vagina after 7 days of the menstrual period. Unlike other contraceptive treatment, this treatment makes a woman’s periods lighter than usual. For this reason, it is also used as a treatment for lowering down the heavy periods, even if women who don’t need contraception.
Mirena IUD device includes a string at both ends. This is used for removing it. Doctors usually cut short this string to avoid any kind of discomfort for the person using it. You can ask your doctor how to replace or remove it. But keep in mind that it must not be tainted when placing in the uterus. Regular pelvic as well as pap smears checkup is considered essential when using this treatment and to check whether or not it is placed in the right position after 4 to 12 weeks of application.
It must be kept in mind that Mirena is not without risks. You must consult your doctor or physicians about any possible risks as well as combinations with the use of Mirena. It is advised that women with inflammatory diseases like pelvic infection or inflammation in the uterus lining must not undergo such a treatment. Moreover, the device must not be used after completing the suggested timeframe.
